SCHÄNGELMARKT IN KOBLENZ

Children born in Koblenz are affectionately called “Schängelchen.” The term dates back to the French occupation (1794–1814), when many children of French soldiers were born in Koblenz—often out of wedlock. The French first name “Jean” was very common at the time. Since the people of Koblenz couldn’t pronounce the name correctly, they said “Schang,” which eventually became the affectionate nickname “Schängel” in the local dialect.

Originally, “Schängel” was a playful term for the city’s mischievous boys. Today, “Schängelchen” is an affectionate nickname for all children born in Koblenz—symbolizing the cheerful, clever spirit of the people of Koblenz. The Schängel Fountain at City Hall in the Old Town still commemorates this nickname to this day—complete with a water spout—surprise!
