1919
August Diehl purchases the Civilcasino, which offers a direct view of the Rhine in Koblenz-Ehrenbreitstein, and opens the Café Rheinterrasse.

1923
Renovation work creates four guest rooms—marking the start of hotel operations.

1928
The expansion from 4 to 15 guest rooms led to the addition of “Hotel Rheinterrasse” to the name.

1945
French occupying forces seized the hotel after the end of World War II.

1948
August Diehl takes over catering

1967
Franz Diehl, son of August, takes over the family business with his wife Helene and changes the hotel’s name to Diehls Hotel, as it is known today.

1968
Completion of the renovation work—the hotel is now two stories tall, the facade has been standardized, and the number of beds has been increased to 100.

1971
Construction of the current swimming pool and 16 additional double rooms.

1980s
The hotel is expanded to include 1 conference room and 8 additional rooms.

1992
Gisela Diehl, Franz’s youngest daughter, takes over the hotel together with her husband, Hans-Joachim Mehlhorn.

To this day, the hotel has 68 rooms and 3 conference rooms.

Starting in 2015
Nils, Gisela’s son, returns to the family business after spending many years abroad and will take over as the third-generation owner in the near future.

As of 2025
Nils Mehlhorn has officially taken over the hotel and has since been the owner and managing director of DIEHLs Hotel.
