A SHORT TOUR THROUGH THE BENDORF BUTTERFLY PARK

The butterfly park in Bendorf begins with a walk through a sort of climate chamber. The first thing you see there are many display cases containing butterfly chrysalises. In this “chrysalis room,” the butterflies, so to speak, see the light of day. They prefer to emerge from their cocoons in the morning and spend the first hour gathering their energy and inflating their wings. After that, they begin their relatively short lives. Many exotic butterflies naturally live for only a few weeks. To ensure they can survive at all in the butterfly park, the temperatures here are different. The air temperature ranges between 24 and 26 degrees, with humidity around 60 percent. In the butterfly park itself, there are of course other plants—mostly tropical or subtropical—that are suited to the climate. The large flowers serve as the main food source for the butterflies. In addition, there are other feeding stations adorned with fruit. This is because some species, such as the banana butterfly, also need fruit to survive. In the Butterfly Garden, you can also find nocturnal species. The world’s largest butterfly, with a wingspan of between 20 and 30 centimeters, is one such example. During the day, you can easily spot it resting; at night, it goes out in search of food. Visitors to the Bendorf Butterfly Park can enjoy a varied program and discover amazing animals. A WALK THROUGH THE BENDORF BUTTERFLY PARK

The butterflies are raised in Ecuador, among other places. There, the breeders lovingly care for the butterfly larvae and protect them from numerous predators such as spiders, snakes, and birds. As larvae, the butterflies then make their way to the Bendorf Butterfly Garden, where they hatch and, unfortunately, some of them enjoy only a very short life. Some tropical moths and butterflies live for only a few weeks. As a visitor to the Butterfly Garden in Bendorf, you first enter the garden through a kind of climate lock. Exotic butterflies prefer warmer temperatures than we have in our region, which is why the average temperature here ranges between 24 and 26 degrees, with a humidity level of about 60%. At the beginning, you’ll find many display cases. This is where the butterfly pupae emerge as butterflies, which usually happens in the early morning hours. As a visitor, you shouldn’t miss this impressive spectacle. Afterward, you’ll be immersed in a world of butterflies filled with tropical and subtropical plants. There’s a lot of activity here—thousands of butterflies are flocking to feed on the nectar from the large flowers. Additional feeding stations provide plenty of extra food, especially for the swallowtail butterflies. But butterflies aren’t the only things to discover here. In the ponds, you’ll find large Japanese koi carp and turtles frolicking on the islands set up especially for them. You can also admire quails and ornamental finches from Australia and Africa here. There are many interesting small animals to see. In the Moth and Caterpillar House, on the other hand, you’ll find many nocturnal butterflies and silk cocoons.
